I have found that tins are good places when it is very hot, say at lunchtime. I think you'll find someone else comments on this elsewhere. The tins might be too hot to touch but surprisingly adders can often be found underneath. You might think they'd be absolutely fried - but not so.

Other than that I guess you'd need to get out and about early if it's going to be a scorcher as everything will be warming up quickly and moving off. You'll know that anyway!

Just thought - if you don't know Allerthorpe (I certainly don't) you won't know if there are any tins down.

Probably duff advice therefore - sorry!

It will be very difficult to find adders in the middle of the day in the heat - and I normally find that most adders would not be under tins in very hot conditions - it may depend on the amount of dead thatch underneath. I have found a female adder once under a piece of tin in very hot conditions the majority of snakes on my sites do not use tins that much as there is plenty of habitat around them.

Early morning and very late afternoon would be the best times to go out to spot adders - you would probably find pregnant females while the males etc would be in deep cover

Was out Saturday morning, nothing under tins  but came across this girl sunbathing at about 10:15am.

The area where this was taken adders only bask in the mid morning as far as I can tell so timing for me is the key or then again it could be I just haven't seen any at other times

Hi yea you were right about the tins suzi, there are a few tins out on the heath and saw two under different tins. They were red hot to touch and i was quite suprised to find em there. Also there was a toad camoflaged in the mud practically touching one of the female adders, does this normally occur?
By the time i got to the site it was already scorching so I didnt find any out basking in my usual area.
